Dounreay and more Drinking
Gary worked night shift at Tescos on Tuesday night so he slept all day. Pretty rough that he can't find a job in the chemical industry but money always comes in handy. Kinda reminds me of when I tried to do vineyard work when I was towards the end of my degree. I had to chuck it in because it was too mind numbing!
George only had a half day because he is going to America on Friday for work. So he drove us to Thurso to check out the Thurso museum. It had quite a good display about the Dounreay Nuclear power plant so I asked for an in-depth analysis about how the whole thing worked. Pretty interesting that it was only ever really a test/prototype site and everything was going pretty well when the government decided to shut it down. Apparently at one stage it was at the forefront of nuclear power plant design in the world and employed around 4000 people. Unfortunately he couldn't arrange to take me on a tour of the real thing due to massive security issues. Not surprising really, kiwis are not really well known for their tolerance to anything nuclear. We went for a drive around the outside of it anyway.
For dinner Shona cooked us a tasty salmon and salad dinner. We can brush over that fact that it was bought at Tescos and assume it was locally caught, fresh fish. After dinner we drove into Wick to see a band play at "The Camp" bar. I don't know why the bar is called that, its not gay at all. Normally it is a karaoke bar. The band was a reunite of sorts as a guy, Lucian, was visiting from Canada that used to play in the band when he lived in Wick. Joannes late father also used to play in the band so it was pretty cool for her to see everyone back together. She even drank enough dutch courage (or is it "Scot" courage up here?) to get up and have a sing with them. Amazing people up here, I had a yarn to a few people I had never met before and I would always get asked if I wanted another pint, or a wee dram. Very friendly and generous.
